We had planned to paddle on the Chesapeake on New Year's Day, But ran into a bit of unexpected ice. Two possible launch points, Town Park in North East, MD, and the beach at Elk Neck State Park were iced solid. The Elk Neck boat launch (second photo below) was a bit better, but still not safe. With a promise of a south wind and an incoming tide, we might not be able to get back in. Also, we could only paddle about a half mile in any direction due to ice. So we went hiking. We found a ice-free launch spot on the hike, but it was more than a mile from the cars and down a steep, bramble-bound gully. Donna Morgan took these photos, except for the top one which is by Eric Pavlak.
